History of Ladakh

The region of Ladakh, now a part of the state of Jammu & Kashmir in India was from the middle of the 10th century an independent kingdom.  Ruled by the famous king Sengge Namgyal, covered an area from Spiti to western Tibet and beyond sacred sites of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.   Time and again attacked by Kashmiri muslims, the region was in the mid 19th century, annexed to Kashmir.

As you reach Leh for the first time it becomes hard to believe how the traders of silk, carpets and spices must have made it possible to travel on foot or horses and develope this region as a center of the trade.
In 1960’s when the first motorable road was contructed connecting high passes and Leh, touorists discovered more and more about this wonderland.
